SAFE or UNSAFE

I introduced the idea of being careful about materials around the home first by showing some container examples. An telling on me!

A. Waxing the wood furniture with Easy Off Oven Cleaner rather than Pledge.

B. Dusting the top of a pizza with Coment Cleanser rather than Parmesan Cheese.

'A'didn't do the furniture any good but you also have to watch what goes into your mouth. 'B'can be pretty noticeable but an even larger danger exists when pesticides or home chemicals are stored in inappropriate containers.

We actually started with CHEMISTRY - - - I had a periodic Table and pointed to C, O, and H and said we are all a big bag of chemicals mostly made of those three elements and that this was true for the food we eat and the things that are good for us and also true for all of the chemicals that are bad for us.

Proceedure:

(I used 8 oz wide mouth canning jars as containers for each and labeled the pair (#A) or (#B) then labeled the original containers (#A) or (#B) to reveal which was in each container)

There were 11 pairs of liquids or solids that could be found around the home. I had the group look at each pair marked with the same number and decide which of the two (A or B) they thought was safe to eat or drink or use in preparing food.

I did #1 first and referred to news stories of illegal sales of agricultural chemicals is unlabeled bottles and jars such as fruit jars and baby food jars. I did #10 last (I added 11 after I had labeled everything) and related the news story of the Mississippi woman who bought the ready mixed "ROACH POISON" and died after drinking some accidentally.

I asked one volunteer (11 volunteers for 11 sets) to hold up each set in turn so that the group could see the contents and the A or B clearly. I asked the group to vote by raising their hands, "Which would be SAFE to eat, drink, or use is food - - - A or B?" After the vote, I showed the original container marked with the number and A or B for everyone to see and the the kids responded spontaneously, "YES !" or " YUK !" depending on how they voted for each one. It was fun the kids were great and joined in quite naturally.

Ask the Audience - - -

Can anyone suggest pairs that are more difficult to recognize as SAFE or UNSAFE?

Has anyone had an experience - EATING or DRINKING the WRONG thing?

Then we went on to talk about Signal Words and proper mixing and clothes to wear while applying pesticides and various other things - - - it seems that different things came up in each group.
